The Complete Koufonisia Beaches Guide
Koufonisia beaches really have it all! From beautiful sandy shores with crystal clear blue waters to adventurous “beaches” with cliff jumping. They can all easily compete for a spot on the list of top beaches in the Greek islands.
Once you get here your only problem is going to be deciding which beaches to go to.
But don’t worry, during my trip to Koufonisa I made it my mission to visit as many beaches as possible and now I have the full insider scoop on each of them. This guide will give you everything you need to know about the beaches in Koufonisa to help you pick the best ones for your preferences.
For a relaxing day on a sandy beach, Pori Beach is your spot. But for my adventurous friends, taking a short hike to the Pisina Natural Pool is a must.
In this guide, I include information on how to get to them, what to bring, what visitors go to each place for, and what, if any amenities are there to help you plan your trip accordingly.

Koufonisia Beaches Map
Koufonisia is made up of two islands, Ano Koufonisi (Pano Koufonisi or Ano Koufonisia) and Kato Koufonisi (aka Kato Koufonisia). Ano Koufonisi is the main island where everyone stays and Kato Koufonisi is a mostly uninhabited and undeveloped island that many people visit for a day trip.
Ano Koufonisi beaches are mainly located on the south and west sides of the island. Some are accessible by road but some are only accessible by hiking or a bit of rock scrambling.

As you scroll through the details of each of the Koufonisia Beaches, I’ve organized the beaches on Ano Koufonisi in order of location starting with Pori Beach and its surroundings and then heading south and wrapping around to the west. Pick whichever beaches speak to you or start at the top and work your way down for a jam-packed beach-hopping day!
Then at the end, you’ll find a highlight of some of the best Kato Koufonisi Beaches if you decide to do a day trip to the other island.

What to Bring to Koufonisia Beaches
To make the most of your visit to the many beaches in Koufonisia, there are a few things you should make sure to bring with you. I’ve created the below list to help make sure you have everything you may not have known you need.
Lightweight quick-drying towel – especially if you’re planning on beach hopping, having a lightweight, quick-drying towel that the sand doesn’t stick to is key! The last thing you want is to be lugging a soggy wet heavy towel around while you’re hiking or biking from beach to beach.
I love the Nomadix towels for beach hopping! Not only do they perform great, but the company also doing some really great work in the environmental and social impact space which makes me feel even better about my purchase.
Water and snacks – this sun is hot and the water is salty in Greece so you definitely want to make sure you’re drinking plenty of water. With some beaches not having any outlets to purchase provisions, make sure to bring enough of your own food and drinks.
Sun protection – Greek Islands tend to not have a lot of shade so having proper sun protection is very important. Make sure to pack your reef-safe sunscreen, a good hat, sunglasses, and a cover-up.
My favorite reef-safe sunscreen is Raw Elements or Blue Lizzard. One or both of these are always in my bag for any beach vacation.
Sturdy shoes you can hike in – a handful of the beaches I mention below include a hike or some rocks you need to scramble down to get to them. For this, you will appreciate having sturdy grippy shoes.
I recommend a good sports sandal with a durable sole and that is ok to get wet.
Snorkel gear – Koufonisia and its surrounding islands are one of the few places in Greece where you have a high chance of seeing some underwater life including fish, starfish, or even octopi!! If this sounds as exciting to you as it does to me, make sure to pack at least a mask so you can see for yourself!
Floaty – last but not least, if it’s a calm day, having a floaty to lounge on out in the water is a great move! Although the water is very salty making you extremely buoyant, having a floaty to lounge on is a level up.
However please make sure you only buy one if you plan on reusing it. Do not buy one just for the trip and leave it as trash on the island. They already have enough to deal with in terms of trash we don’t need to add on unnecessary garbage just so we can use it for a few days at the beach.

Getting to the Beaches
Being such a small island, all of the beaches are relatively easy to get to with a little bit of effort. Some are right off the road while others will take a bit more effort. Here are the various transportation options to get you to the beautiful beaches of Koufonisia and generally around the island.
Hiking – With there being very little traffic and this island being less mountainous compared to others hiking or walking is a great option for getting to the various Ano Koufonisi beaches. (note: that doesn’t mean it’s flat, there are still hills)
There is even a coastal trail that runs between Fanos Beach and Pori Beach. This trail must be taken to get to some of the more adventurous beaches mentioned in this guide.
Bike or E-bike – This form of transportation is the most common on the island and a lot of fun! You can get to the majority of the beaches this way. However, you won’t be able to take them on the coastal trail but they can get you to the trailhead.

Boat – There is also a boat taxi service through Prassinos Boat Tours or Marvos G. Boat Tours that goes to many of the popular beaches. They have stops at the harbor in Chora, Finikas Beach, Fanso Beach, Italida Beach, and Pori Beach. This is a great and fun way to get around but you will have to plan your day around the boat schedules.
Hotel transportation – some, but not all, hotels or BnBs on the island offer transportation if you want to schedule drop-offs and pick-ups. I wouldn’t count on this being your only plan to get around though.
Kato Koufonisi transportation – If you’re planning on heading to Kato Koufonisi, you will have to take a boat there. If you rent a private boat you can go directly to the beaches via boat.
The other option is to take one of the boat taxis there. The boat taxis have drop-offs at the Taverna and one at Nero Beach. If you want to go to any of the other Kato Koufonisi beaches you will have to walk to them.
Now Let’s Dive into the Amazing Koufonisia Beaches!!
Pori Beach Koufonisia
Pori Beach
Probably the most famous of beaches in Koufonisia due to its long stretch of white sand and Caribbean-like water. A visit to Pori Beach is a must for any trip to Koufonisia. Being the farthest beach from Chora, it will take a little extra work to get to it but it’s 100% worth it!
How to get to Pori Beach: This beach is accessible by road, boat, or hiking trail.
- Road – Located on the northeast side of the island about 1.7 miles (2.7km) from the edge of Chora if you’re going there on the inland road.
- Hiking – you can get there by the coastal trail for a hike along the water.
- Boat – one of the stops on the Prassinos Boat Tours or Marvos G. Boat Tours’ daily schedules.
Why visit Pori Beach: When you think of a Mediterranean beach a picture of Pori Beach might come to mind. A cove with what feels like 360 degrees of white sand beach and calm glassy blue waters this is the perfect spot to spend a relaxing beach day. Although it’s one of the most popular beaches on the island its size allows you to still find a bit of seclusion if you’re willing to walk a bit.
Amenities at Pori Beach: There are two tavernas at Pori Beach but unfortunately neither live up to the hype of their location. They are a bit overpriced for the island (feels like they are using concert venue pricing models) and many people have had issues with the staff being rude. When I was there I didn’t experience the rude staff but could definitely feel the price difference compared to places in town.
Either way, it’s nice to have a place to grab a snack, water, or a drink! If you are to pick one, go with Kalofego.
Gala Beach in Koufonisia
Gala Beach
Hidden within the cliffs this little hidden beach is the complete opposite of your stereotypical beach. Instead of leading to the sea, the water comes in from under the rock cliff creating a mini landlocked beach within an amphitheater-like cave. The beach is made up of pebbles, not sand but that just adds an acoustical allure as the waves create a soothing sound of rustling rocks as they pull the pebbles out and back.
How to get to Gala Beach: This beach is accessible only by hiking but once you are at Pori Beach it’s only about a 0.3 mile (500m) walk from Wana, one of the taverns there.
Located on the northeast tip of Pori Beach, hike here at your own risk as there isn’t a maintained trail, and it takes some rock scrambling to get down to the beach. If you plan on hiking down make sure to wear sturdy shoes with grip and not flip flops.
Why visit Gala Beach: If you’re anything like me and not good at sitting on a beach all day, this is a great little mini adventure to see some unique landscapes and rock formations.

Ksylompatis Caves Koufonisia
Ksylompatis Caves
Beautiful rock landscapes and ancient pirate cave hideouts, this place is simply gorgeous! It isn’t a beach per se but a bonus stop to explore and get some thrills by joining in on the cliff jumping or exploring by boat. I personally never figured out how people got out of the water after jumping in but I’m sure someone would tell you if you asked.
How to get to Ksylompatis Caves: Like Pori Beach, it is accessible by road, boat, or hiking trail. Follow the same instructions to get there and then it is directly north of Pori Beach, behind Wana by foot.
I personally recommend visiting by boat so you can really see the caves and jump in from there to explore.
Why Visit Ksylompatis Caves: Head here for an adventure or to admire Mother Nature’s beautiful architecture. It’s honestly best seen from the water so viewing from a boat or swimming will be most enjoyable.

Pisina Natural Pool in Koufonisia
Pisina (AKA the Natural Pool)
This is definitely one of my favorite places on Ano Koufonisi Island! Built by Mother Nature herself within the cliffsides of the island is a magical small pool filled by the Aegean Sea. Wake up early enough and you may even get it to yourself!
How to get to the Natural Pool: Only accessible by hiking. Located about 900m south of the Pori Beach parking lot, there is a small coastal trail that will take you there. The geo pin on Google isn’t exact so be on the lookout over the cliffs to find this gem. Once you get there be prepared for a bit of a rock scramble down to the pool. Water shoes are recommended.
You can also get here from the southern part of the island by taking the coastal trail north starting at Finika Beach.
Why Visit the Natural Pool: This is another spot for my adventurers! Not your typical beach but more of a natural playground. With options for cliff jumping (do so at your own risk and check the water depth before doing so) and access to take a dip in the sea this is a great place to play.
Amenities at the Natural Pool: There are no amenities, make sure to bring water and anything else you might want with you.
Inventure’s Bay Ano Koufonisia
Inventure’s Bay
One of the more unique Kofonisisa Beaches, Inventure’s Bay is a pebble beach down below the cliff side and inside of a cave of sorts. You have to rock climb a bit down to it which makes it more secluded than other beaches especially if you get there first.
How to get to Inventure’s Bay: Only accessible by hiking. Head to Fanos Beach and take the hiking path about 0.6 miles (950m) northeast or you can also take the hiking path from Pori Beach about 1.25 miles (1.2km) south.
Why Visit Inventure’s Bay: This beach is made up of pebbles so I wouldn’t say you are coming here for comfort but more for a unique beach experience. The cave-like overhang provides plenty of shade and it has easy access to the sea to swim around and snorkel. Make sure to have sturdy shoes or even water shoes since it is very rocky and takes a bit of climbing to get to.
Amenities at Inventure’s Bay: There are no amenities, make sure to bring water and anything else you might want with you.
Italida Beach in Koufonisia
Italida Beach (AKA Platia Pounda Beach)
A very popular beautiful sandy beach, Italida is a local favorite and it will likely show by the amount of people there when you visit. However don’t let that deter you, it’s still a great place for a dip in the beautiful blue Aegean Sea.
How to get to Italida Beach: Accessible by hiking or boat.
- Hiking – Head to Fanos Beach and take the hiking path about 0.2 miles (350m) northeast or you can also take the hiking path from Pori Beach about 1.1 miles (1.8km) south.
- Boat – It is one of the stops on the Prassinos Boat Tours or Marvos G. Boat Tours’ daily schedules.
Why Visit Italida Beach: Easy to get to and a beautiful sandy beach with gorgeous turquoise waters, it makes for a nice place for a relaxing day.
Amenities at Italida Beach: There are no amenities here but Fanos Beach is a short walk away and does have a restaurant and bar.
Fanos Beach Koufonisia
Fanos Beach
A beautiful golden beach with more crystal clear waters. This is another fan favorite. Easily accessible with a nearby beach bar and the option to rent sunbeds, it really has something for everyone.
How to get to Fanos Beach: Accessible by road, hiking, or boat.
- Road – Located on the southern side of the island about 1.1 miles (1.8km) from the edge of Chora via the coastal road.
- Hiking – you can get there by the coastal trail from Pori Beach or walking from town.
- Boat – one of the stops on the Prassinos Boat Tours or Marvos G. Boat Tours’ daily schedules.
Why Visit Fanos Beach: Beautiful beach with crystal clear waters, easy to get to, nearby amenities, and the opportunity to spot sea life. What more could you want in a beach!? Make sure to bring your snorkel gear and swim along the cliffs to see if you can find any starfish or octopi.
Amenities at Fanos Beach: Fanos Taverna is located right on the beach making it super easy to grab lunch or drinks during your beach day. I had lunch here one day and was pleasantly surprised by the kid’s menu meatballs with pita and french fries and a Mythos beer the size of my head! However, there are mixed reviews of the food overall, this was just my experience.
This is also one of the only places on the island that does lounger rentals. So if that’s the vibe you’re looking for, this is your place!
Finkas Beach in Ano Koufonisia
Finikas Beach
An easily accessible beach with an adorable taverna right on the sand this is a must-stop on your Koufonisia beaches tour. This is also where the coastal hiking trail starts so it’s a great starting point if you want to beach-hop your way down the trail.
How to get to Finikas Beach: Accessible by road, hiking, or boat.
- Road – Located on the southern side of the island about 0.6 miles (1.4km) from the edge of Chora via the coastal road.
- Hiking – you can get there by the coastal trail from Pori Beach or walking from town.
- Boat – one of the stops on the Prassinos Boat Tours or Marvos G. Boat Tours’ daily schedules.
Why Visit Finikas Beach: Beautiful beach, crystal clear waters, easy to get to, and a great taverna on sight, what else could you ask for?!
Amenities at Finikas Beach: Finikas Bar and Restaurant is right on the beach and it’s a fan favorite for beachside restaurants in the area.
Angel’s Eye
Another beautiful natural pool to explore. This one can be hit or miss though depending on the weather but it’s very close to Chora so worth it to swing by and see what the conditions are like.
How to get to Angel’s Eye: Just outside of Chora take the road as close to the Google pin as possible and then walk over to the pool.
Why Visit Angel’s Eye: Usually less busy than the natural pool but still a fun spot to adventure in. There’s usually sea life in the pool too so make sure to bring your mask and snorkel. Just be careful of sea urchins.
Amenities at Angel’s Eye: There are no amenities right by the Angel’s Eye but plenty of places nearby in Chora. The highly rated Sorokos is super close and is open from 10 am – 4 am daily. Definitely worth checking out if you’re nearby.
Ammos Beach from the harbor
Ammos Beach
The most popular beach in Koufonisia due to its location and its beautiful stretch of soft yellow sand. Plus being right in town makes it extremely easy to get to if you are staying in Chora.
How to get to Ammos Beach: Right in the heart of town, this is the first beach you will see as you come into port.
Why Visit Ammos Beach: this is the perfect low-maintenance beach for an easy visit and relaxing day especially if you’re staying in Chora.
Amenities at Ammos Beach: being right on the edge of town you have easy access to all of Chora, its restaurants, bars, and convenience stores.
Faraglioni Kato Koufonisi
Kato Koufonisi Beaches
Kato Koufonisi is a mostly uninhabited island with wild goats and just one small taverna. No large ferries go here but rather you have to take a boat taxi or a private boat to visit the island. Like Ano Koufonisi, Kato Kofonisi beaches span from beautiful sandy beaches to insane rock formations you’ll never forget.
Being much more remote, head here for the chance to get a gorgeous Greek Island beach all to yourself! Just make sure to bring plenty of water and whatever food you want for the day especially if you plan on hiking to one of the farther beaches.
Both Prassinos Boat Tours and Marvos G Boat Tours have daily boat taxis from Ano Koufonisi with stops at the Taverna and Nero Beach.
Laki Beach is the closest beach to the port made of pebbles and insane waters. It’s a great and easy day trip from Ano Koufonisi.
Detis Beach is on the hiking trail to Nero Beach. It is mostly a pebble beach but it does have a patch of sand. This is a fun place to explore as there are lots of caves and rocks to check out. Make sure to bring your snorkel gear.
Nero Beach is one of the most famous Kato Koufonisi Beaches due to its long sandy shores mixed with fine pebbles. You can get here by hiking about 30-40 minutes from the taverna or take a boat taxi directly to the beach.
Hawaii Beach is a picture-perfect beach of white sand and aquamarine waters that seems a bit more like you are in Hawaii than on a Greek Island. It’s a shorter 10-minute hike from the taverna making it quite accessible.
Faraglioni and Kastelli are only accessible by private boat but are 100% necessary to check out if you decide to have a boat day. They are both beautiful rock formations with caves and passageways to explore that just cannot be missed. You can jump out to swim and snorkel here as well.
