Bike Rentals in Koufonisia Greece – Everything you need to know

Being such a small island and rental cars not being readily available, bike rentals in Koufonisia quickly become a right of passage for visitors to the island. Even though you can walk pretty much everywhere, having a bike helps you get from place to place much faster allowing you to optimize your beach time!

When I was planning my trip to Koufonisia I struggled to find great information on bike rental options on the island. And if you’re a planner like me, not being able to plan this out ahead of time would probably stress you out too.

So to help you with your trip planning to this amazing Greek Island I put together this guide to help make it easy to choose what type of bike to rent, who to rent bikes from, and where you can take bikes on the island.

Why Rent a Bike in Koufonisia

With a lack of transportation options, having a rental bike on Koufonisia really helps your ability to see more of the island than you otherwise may have without one. Even though it’s only 2.2 miles long and walking is doable, having a bike makes things much easier.

And now with the introduction of e-bike rentals, this makes hills much more manageable and just a fun activity for your vacation.

If you are staying outside of Chora, having a bike rental will be super helpful and allow you the freedom to easily go into town and back without having to rely on your hotel or bnb to drive you or having to walk a few miles every time you want to do so.

Sustainability Bonus:

Using a bike for transportation is a huge win for the environment over flooding this tiny island with gas-powered vehicles cars and ATV!

Yay lower carbon emissions!!

Types of Bikes to Rent

There are 3 types of bikes you can rent on the island: Standard Bikes, Mountain Bikes, and E-Bikes with the price increasing in that same order.

If you plan on biking from Chora to Pori, you will need to climb some steep hills. If you’re in the mood for a workout, a mountain bike would be the way to go or if you want something a bit more leisurely I would highly suggest getting an e-bike.

If you’re just planning on using your bike around town and to the nearby beaches, a regular bike will work just fine.

There are also options for kids bikes and bikes with child seats if you are traveling here with your family.

Where You Can Bike in Koufonisia

Roads – Since there are very few cars on the island, biking on the roads is generally safe, however, you should still always wear a helmet and be on the lookout for cars. Be aware though that some of the roads especially leading to Pori Beach can get pretty bumpy since they aren’t very well maintained.

In Town – When you get into the main part of Chora it will become a bit difficult to ride your bike due to the pedestrians walking around but on the outsides of the main streets, you can zip around just fine.

To the Beaches – You can get to many of the beaches by bike via the roads. However, there are some beaches that you won’t be able to get to because they are only accessible by foot. Since parts of the coastal trail are fully sand, you won’t be able to take your bikes on the trail but you can park them at Pori Beach or Fanos or Finkas Beach and walk from there.

Where to Get Bike Rentals in Koufonisia

There are a few different companies that have bike rentals in Koufonisa. None of them have online reservation systems, rather you will need to email or call them to set it up. And even then, they may just tell you to come in once you get to the island.

You may also have the option to rent bikes through your hotel or BnB. I found a few places that had this option.

1. Koufonisia Bikes

Google Rating: 4.9 stars

Ran by the owners of Villa Maria Vekri, Maira and Giorgos, this is my number 1 choice for renting bikes on the island. We rented from them when we visited and not only are the bikes in great shape, Giorgos has great customer service and picked us up from our hotel to bring us to the bikes and dropped us back off after we returned them.

Bike options: E-bikes with pedal assist or with a throttle. The Aurelia bikes with the pedal assist had more power for the hills than the throttle bikes so I recommend getting an Aurelia.

Location: Located at the Villa Maria Verki right down the road from my favorite Italian restaurant on the island Lavanda e Rosmarino Trattoria Italiana,

Bonus Tips

Bring a headlamp – If you do plan on renting a bike in Koufonisia, I recommend bringing a headlamp with you especially if you will be riding your bike at night. Our e-bikes had lights on the front and back, however, having extra light was super helpful when navigating back to our hotel after dinner in Chora.

Bring a backpack – Having a backpack, a bike with a basket, or bungee cords to strap your bag to is super helpful. I had a tote bag for all of my beach essentials which would have been super annoying to have to carry on my bike if I couldn’t strap it to the back with bungee cords.

Wear a helmet – Helmets aren’t required on the island but I highly recommend wearing one anyway. Even though there aren’t that many cars, you are still sharing the road with cars, and wearing a helmet could save your life if something goes wrong. Plus the roads can be super bumpy or sandy in places which increases the potential of falling.

Final Thoughts

Bike rentals in Koufonisia make for a great option for transportation to help you get from place to place quicker since car rentals aren’t available, walking will take a lot longer and the boat taxis only go to certain places and have a fixed schedule.

If you are staying outside of Chora you will definitely want a bike to make getting to and from town much easier.

Overall, it’s a great fun and more environmentally friendly way of getting around. Just make sure to ride safely, wear a helmet, and look out for pedestrians.
